The second Activate Inclusion Sports Day was held in Darwin on September 15, 2021.

The Activate Inclusion program is a ground-breaking initiative focused on providing sporting pathways for students aged 5 – 18 years with a physical, intellectual, or sensory disability. The Darwin AISD increased in participation since its inaugural event earlier in the year with participation numbers reaching 175 students from various schools across the Greater Darwin region.

The event showcased a range of activities for students to interact and participate in. Students were able to experience sports they may not otherwise have an opportunity to try, with the purpose of connecting students to sport for future participation. Sports such as AFL, Cricket, Baseball, Golf, Touch Football, Tennis, and Soccer were thoroughly enjoyed by all students due to the flexible and adaptive nature of the sports.

Feedback from schools and stakeholders who attended this event recognised the energetic sports coaches and their ability to adapt well to the students. As well as the rotations being inclusive for all.

Total Recreation Executive Director Keoh Goodall was pleased with how the day was delivered. “Often days like these are very hectic and students are running around everywhere. But the day ran smoothly and highlighted the importance of being well organised and prepared to allow students, teachers and coaches to flourish”.

This day would not have been possible without the support from Total Recreation, Variety the Children’s Charity – NT and Disability Sports Australia. Supporting partners included NDSP Plan Managers, School Sport NT, YMCA Alice Springs and SEDA College. DSNT would like to extend a thank you to Sitzler Netball Centre which ensured a safe environment for the day.
