Variety Activate Inclusion Sports Day - Darwin

On Friday the 10th of June, Disability Sports NT held the first Variety Activate Inclusion Sports Day for 2022 in Darwin, and it was a hit! It was great to have some new school groups join the mix this year and get a taste of what it’s all about.

This program is designed to promote inclusive sport and recreational opportunities. The participants were treated to recreational adaptations from Blind Sports Australia, Topend Zumba Crew, Golf NT, Wheelchair NRL NT, Touch Football NT and NT Cricket. It was great to see the sports come with enthusiasm and drive to get the participants involved.

After a couple hours of fun, the day ended on a high with a sausage sizzle and showbags! The aim is to expose people aged 5 to 18 living with disabilities to pathways for the sports they participated in, as well building awareness of community services and programs. We hope for the Variety AISD’s to be a steppingstone rather than a one-off experience.

We would like to give a special thanks to the people who helped the day come together: Variety, Disability Sports Australia, Total Recreation, NDSP and Blind Sports Australia. We were also lucky enough to have Occupational Therapy students from CDU and high school students from SEDA attend the event and help facilitate the delivery of activities and build rapport with the participants.

We have received positive feedback from a mix of participants, parents, teachers, carers, and peak sporting bodies, commending the organisation of the event as well as the activities that were delivered.

DSNT aim to hold two more AISD’s in Darwin this year, as well as one in Katherine and Alice Springs. Please stay tuned for the dates and registration information, which will be announced soon!
